JobCalculator
Replacing napkin math with accurate estimates, right on the job site.
The Problem
A concrete company's crews were estimating materials the way they always had — experience, gut feel, and math scratched on the back of a receipt. It worked well enough most of the time, but "most of the time" meant over-ordering on some jobs and running short on others. Both cost money.
Newer workers didn't have decades of experience to fall back on. They'd call the office, wait for someone to run numbers, or just guess. Training someone to estimate accurately took months of on-the-job learning, and even experienced crews made mistakes when jobs got complex — odd shapes, slopes, varying depths.
The Solution
We built a mobile-first web app that lets workers plug in job dimensions — length, width, depth, shape — and instantly get accurate material quantities, mix ratios, and cost estimates. No app store download, no login. Just pull it up on your phone at the job site and punch in the numbers.
The calculator handles the formulas that trip people up: irregular shapes, waste factors, unit conversions between yards and bags. It turns a five-minute phone call to the office into a ten-second calculation on site.
How We Thought About It
The instinct with a project like this is to build a full-featured construction management platform with user accounts, job tracking, reporting dashboards, and a monthly subscription. That's what most software companies would pitch.
But the actual problem was a guy standing next to a foundation form who needs to know how many yards of concrete to order. He doesn't want to create an account. He doesn't want a dashboard. He wants to type in three numbers and get an answer.
So that's what we built. No login, no onboarding, no feature bloat. A tool that does one thing well and gets out of the way. The crew adopted it because it was faster than what they were already doing — not because someone made them sit through a training session.
The Result
- Adopted by field crews without any formal training or rollout
- Reduced material estimation errors and over-ordering waste
- New workers productive immediately instead of learning estimation over months
- Zero friction — no app install, no account, works on any phone
